Laminate

Description
Laminate flooring is a tongue and groove interlocking flooring system that floats on top of the existing floor. It is made up of a hard core material that has a laminated printed layer and a special backing, that are secured to the core and then saturated in plastic-type resins, called melamine.

Uses
A great alternative to hardwood floors. The low maintenance and cheaper price of wood laminates makes it a very popular floor covering.

Types
Wood laminates come with either a polyurethane surface finish or an acrylic impregnated finish. The polyurethane finish is similar to site-applied finishes. The acrylic system is even more thorough. The acrylic is first colored and then injected into the wood. It penetrates the entire first layer and then solidifies, becoming a composite of wood and plastic. The result is a tougher finish, a longer warranty (up to25 years) and, sometimes, a commercial rating. Also, there are certain types of laminates that are glueless, called Quick Step.
